I feel like your character is more physical this time around and not just because he's walking around jacked and shirtless you're in the desert, you're on a boat. I just think that, right now, it's maybe nice for people to have an escape and watch something a little bit crazy and weird for a couple hours - not that the world isn't crazy and weird enough, but it's a different kind of crazy and weird! I just think we can give people a couple hours to forget about any of their problems and just laugh along and smile and get grossed out about a bunch of blood I think we've done our job! I feel like Greg has created such a rich world with so much to explore. We went in to meet with the writers right before the pandemic luckily, we got to meet some of the new writers this season. I know that Greg Daniels and the writers room are very deep into the second season. I was wondering if you could go into your experiences on that show and offer a tease for Season 2.Īmell: I can tell you that we start shooting Season 2 in January back in Vancouver. Speaking of streaming success, Upload was renewed for a second season within a week of its premiere. RELATED: Life After Upload: Great Movies and TV Shows About the Afterlife That was unbelievable for us and really special and more than we ever expected. and a ton of territories around the world. ![]() ![]() We were hoping to make a small splash and we became the number one movie on Netflix when we premiered in the U.S. And, ultimately, that's what we thought was the best path and that's how we got the most eyeballs on it. With Code 8, this was a small movie that we made independently and then we made a licensing deal with Netflix. Sometimes it's just the right time, and I think Amazon and Netflix are giving filmmakers and creative people an opportunity to get something out to the masses. There's not always any rhyme or reason why a movie is successful or not, a movie can be well reviewed and not make any money and a movie can review terribly and make a fortune. You can take a risk on these streaming networks that are tough to warrant in the theatrical world because they're such a financial risk taking them out theatrically and just hoping it does well. I just think the convenience factor is so high, mixed with high-quality filmmaking now. When given the opportunity, most of the time, I'm going to want to watch a movie in my living room, order some food and pause it when I need to. Obviously, I don't think anybody was expecting a global pandemic, but even before that, I think theaters were becoming more for the $200 million movies. I love going to the movies and to see movies in theaters, but at the same time, I have a 1-year-old son. ![]() How has it been working with streaming services, especially with Netflix on feature film projects?Īmell: I really think it's the future. ![]() In mentioning streaming platforms, you've gotten to work on these films, you've got Upload at Amazon and you also got to do Code 8 with Netflix. I would love to go back and try to kill Cole, and just getting to work with this cast. Hopefully, I'm being thought of for the third one, and hopefully the second one is successful enough to warrant it. There's so many outlets and streaming networks and things to watch that sometimes you need to get a little weird, and I think these movies are weird in the best way. I think they're a lot of fun, I think they give the audience what they're looking for. I would love to continue to make these movies. Where would you personally like to see Max go next?Īmell: I'm not nearly as creative as the guys that write these movies so anything I say won't be as great as what they come up with. I was talking to McG earlier and he said he had a story for a potential third installment.
